Let's start with some scripture, Philippians 4:6-8 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
I hear you. I hear you! It's easier said than done. You say, "Angela, You have no idea what I've been through". I get it. Many of us have horrible stories! Most of us have pressure in life. Many of us are carrying a dark truth about our past or even our current situation! And each of us in our own pressure has legitimate reasons to worry, or so we have convinced ourselves. We have to understand that anxiety and depression are like a cancer to our mind, will and emotions. It can cripple our dreams and kill our hopes for a normal life. This is why this scripture is so important. Statistically 1-3 people have experienced abuse of some kind. 1-13 suffer from anxiety. WHAT?!!! This is a staggering reality for most Americans! We all carry a lot on our shoulders. But we weren't created to live that way. God has a plan for us to overcome all the pressures of this world. I don't come here to say I have all the answers. I do come from experience, not only for myself but from others that have suffered and have overcome in this area. But if we are to ever have a life free from anxiety, worry and fear we need to be willing to shine a light on this from the Holy Word of God. Only through His Word will we be healed completely. Lets's break down each scripture. Verse 6 says "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." What do we see here? The writer Paul has a revelation about something important. And it plays a huge part in our reality today. We will have situations in life that will make us anxious! Every single one of us! But there is something that I don't see here.... It doesn't say to post about it. It doesn't say to tell all your friends! It doesn't say to bury it deep down so that you don't feel anymore. And It definitely doesn't say to meditate on your worries day and night and imagine every single outcome. We are to pray and petition with a thankful heart, present your request to God! Ok, how are we to do that? What is prayer? It is a conversation that we have with the throne room of God. Websters says this: "a solemn(formal; dignified) request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God or an object of worship." God is our Father, and His Word says that He wants good for us, to prosper us and give us hope! Jeremiah 29:11. He wants nothing more than to help us.
As a daughter, I knew exactly how to approach my Daddy. I knew the right words and how to speak to him. Mostly, because I respect him, but also because I know how much he loves me. We are to approach the Father the same way. "Well, Angela, good for you! But I didn't have that. So I don't know how!" I'm glad you said that, because God wants to be that Father to you! He wants to take all your worries that you have and take care of each one. He wants to be that Father and friend that you have been longing for all your life. All you have to do is ask. Ok, next it says prayer and petition. You need to write down everything that worries you and make it real clear! Let Him know EXACTLY what is going on in your heart. That means every detail! EVERY SINGLE ONE! Peter tells us, "Casting all your care upon him; for he cares for you." 1 Peter 5:7. Do you think that Peter knows about anxiety? I think the whole denying Christ bares proof with that. He also knows what it is like to be forgiven and to be released from past mistakes in order to grab hold of the call that was on His life. That means you can too. Lets go on.
The next part says, with Thanksgiving! You don't say 'thank you' until something has already been given to you! This is where faith steps in. Hebrews 11:1 says "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." You need to thank God for giving you peace of mind before you feel peace, as though it has already been done! Not with doubt, not with question, but with faith knowing that He is a good Father. His love for you will cause all things work together for the good and He is a rewarded of those who diligently seek Him. (Romans 8:28, Hebrews 11:6). He longs for you to have peace! Again all you need to is be honest and ask! Present your request to Him. He wants to know your heart so that He can bring healing to it!
Verse 7 says that "the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." There is a supernatural peace that will flood every fiber of your being. It will cause you to rest in His will for your life (remember that His will is to prosper you)! This isn't the kind of peace that you need to try and figure out, but that will blow your mind. The kind of peace that even though your world seems to be imploding around you, you will have an assurance that everything will be ok! THIS means that there WILL be troubles. But those troubles won't consume or cause you to be held captive. He want's you free and "Whom the Son sets free is free indeed!" John 8:36. It will stand as a hedge of protection around your thoughts guarding you and protecting you. Just like your spiritual armor protects and guards your spiritual walk, His peace will guard your mind. It will help you rest so that you can allow His word to start the healing process. WOW! God will create a spiritual hospital of peace so that you can heal! AMEN!! He is so good! I imagine it like a father sitting next to a child's bed while they are sick so that they can recover. Never leaving their side until their child is whole.
This is what His peace does. It guards and protects and it takes you out of your head. Your mind is the battle ground. Some of it brought on by the enemy of God, satan and his minions to try and keep us from our potential. And some of it caused by the choices that we have made. The things that we have chosen to feed on. Just like fat, heart disease and diabetes can be a product of a bad physical diet. Anxiety, depression and fear are usually a result of a poor mental diet. But the peace of God will be a barrier from all those weapons. This all hinges on your faith in Jesus Christ. Which brings us to verse 8. This is a key point! What are you thinking about on a daily basis? What have you allowed to swim around in your thoughts? Is it what God wants us to think on as the scripture states? Or is it the opposite: false, undignified, wrong, dirty, ugly, deplorable, inferior, and disrespectful? If it's the latter then I promise there anxiety will be with guns blazing! The word of God has numerous scriptures that tell us to guard our hearts and minds. Why is this? Because out of it comes our actions. Luke 6:44-45 says this, "For each tree is known by its own fruit. Indeed, people do not gather figs from thorn-bushes, or grapes from brambles. 45. The good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart,and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks." The very thing we think about will affect the way we treat ourselves and others around us. God wants to protect our minds and our hearts. God's heart has been aimed towards relationship since the beginning and He created us to be that way. He wants to protect us from anything that will keep us from being in a healthy relationship with others and especially with Him. This means being honest with our hurts and thoughts of anxiety.
